Institutional Compliance & Control Systems Series™

Governance, Compliance & Risk Pathway™

Half Series | Modules 1–6

Build the foundational knowledge, judgment, and institutional perspective needed to understand oversight environments, identify institutional vulnerabilities, evaluate control systems, interpret audit findings, assess risk, and strengthen sustainable compliance practices.

6 Modules | 6 Contact Hours | Self-Paced | 90-Day Access | Certificate Awarded

Effective compliance is not a checklist. It is a system of governance, evidence, accountability, and continuous oversight.

Institutions operating in sponsored research and other regulated environments are continuously accountable for how responsibilities are assigned, controls operate, decisions are documented, risks are identified, and corrective action is sustained.

Audit readiness cannot be achieved through documentation alone.

Strong compliance environments depend on clear governance, effective control systems, institutional accountability, reliable evidence, informed judgment, and the ability to recognize weaknesses before they become recurring failures.

The Institutional Compliance & Control Systems Series™ Half Series develops the foundational capabilities needed to understand and strengthen those systems.

Learners examine how oversight, risk, internal controls, documentation, audit findings, and organizational culture work together to influence institutional compliance and accountability.

The CODE™ Standard guides learning throughout the series.

Competence
Build the knowledge and professional judgment needed to understand oversight structures, compliance expectations, institutional risk, control systems, and audit evaluation.

Oversight
Strengthen monitoring, accountability, review, escalation, and governance practices that support effective institutional compliance.

Documentation
Maintain clear, complete, and defensible evidence supporting institutional decisions, control activities, findings, corrective actions, and accountability.

Execution
Apply compliance and control principles through risk assessment, control evaluation, findings analysis, corrective action, and sustainable institutional practice.

Upon successful completion of the Half Series, learners will be able to:

  • Evaluate institutional exposure through an oversight and audit-readiness lens.
  • Understand how federal and sponsor oversight environments influence institutional accountability.
  • Identify recurring vulnerability patterns and conditions that increase institutional risk.
  • Interpret compliance expectations and institutional responsibilities within sponsored programs.
  • Analyze how audit findings are constructed, documented, communicated, and evaluated.
  • Assess the effectiveness and sustainability of internal control systems.
  • Map institutional risk across sponsored research environments.
  • Examine how leadership tone, accountability structures, and organizational culture influence compliance performance.

The Institutional Compliance & Control Systems Series™ Half Series is designed for professionals who support, evaluate, manage, oversee, or need to better understand institutional compliance and control environments.

This series may be especially valuable for:

  • Research Administrators
  • Compliance Professionals
  • Internal Audit Professionals
  • Sponsored Programs Professionals
  • Research Finance Professionals
  • Department and College Research Administrators
  • Grants and Contracts Professionals
  • Research Managers and Supervisors
  • Research Leaders
  • Institutional Risk and Assurance Professionals
  • Professionals transitioning into compliance, audit, or control responsibilities
  • Institutional teams strengthening governance and accountability capability

Because this series is part of the Governance, Compliance & Risk Pathway™, learners build foundational compliance and control capability while developing the institutional perspective needed to recognize how risk, governance, evidence, and accountability interact across the research enterprise.

The Institutional Compliance & Control Systems Series™ focuses on the institutional systems that support compliance, accountability, internal controls, audit readiness, findings response, and sustainable governance.

Its focus is the architecture of institutional compliance and control, rather than the specialized requirements of one individual compliance domain.

It does not replace other Purple Sheep Institute™ series.

Post-Award Financial Stewardship Series™ focuses on award-level financial stewardship and the financial responsibilities associated with managing sponsored funding.

Data Security, Risk & Research Compliance Series™ provides deeper development in research data governance, cybersecurity, privacy, data protection, and related institutional risk.

AI Governance, Oversight & Institutional Risk Series™ focuses on institution-wide AI governance, responsible use, oversight, and AI-related institutional risk.

Research Security & Foreign Influence Series™ focuses on research-security governance, disclosure, due diligence, sensitive technologies, and collaboration-related security risk.

Clinical Research Administration & Compliance Series™ provides specialized instruction in the administration, regulation, and institutional oversight of clinical research.

This distinction allows learners to understand enterprise compliance and control systems without duplicating the deeper specialized capabilities developed elsewhere in the Purple Sheep Institute™ portfolio.

Module 1: Federal Oversight Architecture & Institutional Evaluation

Examine how federal agencies, sponsors, and oversight bodies evaluate institutional compliance, governance, and operational effectiveness.

Learners strengthen their understanding of how institutional practices are viewed through an external oversight lens and what evidence supports defensible accountability.

Module 2: Audit Triggers & Systemic Vulnerability Patterns

Identify common risk indicators, recurring compliance weaknesses, and conditions that increase institutional exposure.

Learners strengthen their ability to recognize patterns that may signal deeper system weaknesses rather than isolated errors.

Module 3: Uniform Guidance as Enforcement Doctrine

Explore how Uniform Guidance establishes compliance expectations and informs institutional accountability within federally sponsored programs.

Learners examine how regulatory expectations translate into institutional responsibilities, control requirements, documentation needs, and professional judgment.

Module 4: Constructing & Interpreting Audit Findings

Analyze how findings are developed, documented, communicated, and evaluated within oversight environments.

Learners strengthen their ability to distinguish the condition, criteria, cause, effect, and institutional significance of a finding and understand what it communicates about control effectiveness.

Module 5: Institutional Risk Mapping & Control System Assessment

Assess organizational risk areas and evaluate the effectiveness of internal control structures across sponsored research environments.

Learners connect risk identification with control design, institutional responsibility, evidence, and the need for appropriate monitoring or escalation.

Module 6: Control Culture, Leadership Tone & Sustainable Compliance

Examine how leadership behaviors, accountability structures, organizational culture, and recurring institutional practices influence long-term compliance performance.

Learners examine how strong control environments are sustained through expectations, responsibility, communication, follow-through, and consistent leadership behavior rather than policy alone.

Each module follows the Purple Sheep Institute™ Research Center learning structure:

Instructional Lecture
Engage with focused instruction designed to strengthen professional knowledge, institutional understanding, and compliance judgment.

Applied Learning
Move from understanding to application through institution-focused exercises, scenarios, assessments, planning tools, and professional judgment activities.

Knowledge Assessment
Demonstrate understanding of the module’s core concepts and their application within research administration practice.

The learning experience is designed to help learners understand not only how compliance and control systems operate, but also where vulnerabilities emerge, what evidence demonstrates effectiveness, how risk should be evaluated, and when corrective action or escalation may be needed.

The Half Series moves learners beyond passive instruction by connecting each module to practical institutional application.

Applied learning may include:

  • Oversight-environment assessments
  • Audit-trigger analyses
  • Institutional vulnerability reviews
  • Compliance-expectation mapping
  • Audit-finding interpretation exercises
  • Documentation-defensibility assessments
  • Institutional risk maps
  • Internal control evaluations
  • Leadership-tone scenarios
  • Control-culture assessments
  • Compliance sustainability planning
  • Institutional escalation exercises

Learners are encouraged to apply concepts within the context of their own institutional environment while recognizing that governance structures, control systems, sponsor portfolios, oversight practices, and institutional risk profiles may differ across organizations.

This pathway supports continuing education and professional development aligned with:

  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA)
  • Certified Pre-Award Research Administrator (CPRA)

Modules: 1–6
Contact Hours: 6
Format: Self-Paced
Access Period: 90 Days
Certificate: Awarded Upon Successful Completion

The Half Series consists of Modules 1–6 of the Institutional Compliance & Control Systems Series™.

The Half Series is derived directly from the Full Series curriculum and is not a separately developed or independently sequenced curriculum.

Course completion does not remove access during the active enrollment period. Learners retain access for the duration of their 90-day enrollment period.

Purple Sheep Institute™ designs its research administration curriculum around enduring principles, institutional capabilities, professional judgment, and applied practice rather than temporary requirements alone.

Curriculum is reviewed annually through the Institute’s Governance Board and Advisory Council review process and updated to reflect meaningful changes in regulation, sponsorship, technology, professional practice, and the research environment.

Regulations, agency guidance, audit priorities, enforcement approaches, sponsor expectations, systems, and institutional policies may change. Where current requirements are discussed, learners remain responsible for confirming the requirements applicable to their institution, sponsor, activity, and circumstances at the time an operational decision is made.

This approach allows the curriculum to remain durable while ensuring that meaningful developments can be incorporated through the Institute’s ongoing governance and annual review process.

Strong compliance environments do not depend on one knowledgeable individual.

They require coordinated governance, accountability, controls, documentation, monitoring, communication, and institutional follow-through.

The Institutional Compliance & Control Systems Series™ can support:

  • Research administration professional development
  • Compliance workforce development
  • Internal control awareness
  • Audit-readiness initiatives
  • Risk-management capability
  • Departmental and central-office alignment
  • Cross-functional professional education

The Purple Sheep CPE™ Institutional Compliance & Control Systems Series
★★★★★

The Purple Sheep CPE™ Institutional Compliance & Control Systems Series delivered an outstanding overview of the governance and internal control structures behind effective sponsored programs administration. It translated complex regulatory requirements into practical strategies, showing how strong control environments improve accountability, risk management, audit readiness, and stewardship of sponsored funds.

I especially valued the focus on embedding compliance into everyday operations rather than treating it as a standalone function. The knowledge is immediately applicable for research administrators, grants and contracts professionals, compliance officers, and finance leaders.

Excellent program and a worthwhile investment for institutional leaders navigating today’s research compliance landscape.
