12 Modules | 12 Contact Hours | Self-Paced | 180-Day Access | Certificate Awarded
Responsible post-award administration connects financial stewardship, institutional accountability, documentation, and sound judgment throughout the life of an award.
Why This Series Matters
Receiving an award creates an ongoing institutional responsibility to manage sponsor resources responsibly throughout the life of the project.
Institutions must interpret award requirements, apply financial principles, monitor activity, document decisions, manage changes, maintain accountability, identify emerging risks, resolve financial or compliance concerns, and complete awards in a manner that can withstand institutional and sponsor review.
The Post-Award Financial Stewardship Series™ Full Series develops the capabilities needed to support that complete stewardship environment.
Learners examine how financial judgment, monitoring, documentation, institutional controls, risk management, remediation, and leadership communication work together to protect sponsored resources and sustain institutional trust.
Grounded in the CODE™ Standard
The CODE™ Standard guides learning throughout the series.
Competence
Build the knowledge and professional judgment needed to understand award stewardship, cost principles, financial monitoring, labor controls, institutional systems, remediation, and post-award decision-making.

Because this series is part of the Research Administration Foundations Pathway™, learners build strong post-award capability while developing the institutional perspective needed to understand how award-level financial decisions connect to broader organizational accountability.
What Makes This Series Distinct
The Post-Award Financial Stewardship Series™ focuses specifically on the institutional responsibilities that begin after sponsored funding has been awarded.
Its focus is the financial stewardship, monitoring, accountability, documentation, change management, control environment, remediation, and leadership visibility required to manage sponsored resources responsibly throughout the post-award lifecycle.
Some post-award responsibilities naturally intersect with broader institutional functions. This series addresses those areas at the level required to manage sponsored awards effectively without replacing the deeper specialized instruction provided elsewhere in the Purple Sheep Institute™ portfolio.
Facilities & Administrative (F&A) Rate Development Series™ provides deeper instruction in F&A methodology, rate development, cost allocation, and rate negotiation.
Institutional Compliance & Control Systems Series™ provides deeper instruction in enterprise compliance architecture, institutional controls, investigations, assurance, and risk systems.
Operational Readiness & Research Infrastructure Series™ provides deeper instruction in enterprise systems, technology, workforce, and research infrastructure design.
Executive Stewardship & Institutional Leadership Series™ develops executive-level research enterprise stewardship rather than post-award financial practice.
Institutional Funding & Proposal Development Series™ focuses on the institutional capability required before sponsored funding is awarded.
This distinction allows learners to understand the full post-award stewardship environment while preserving clear pathways for deeper specialization across the Institute.
Explore the Curriculum
Module 1: Institutional Stewardship Doctrine & Accountability Frameworks
Examine the principles, responsibilities, and accountability structures that support responsible management of sponsored funding.
Learners connect post-award financial activity to the broader institutional obligation to steward sponsor resources, document decisions, and maintain accountability throughout the award lifecycle.
Module 2: Cost Principles as Enforceable Control Systems
Explore how allowability, allocability, reasonableness, and consistency function as institutional financial and decision-making controls.
Learners strengthen their ability to evaluate sponsored costs through both a financial stewardship lens and an institutional accountability lens.
Module 3: Financial Monitoring Architecture & Active Oversight Design
Evaluate monitoring systems, review practices, and oversight activities that support responsible award management.
Learners examine how institutions use active monitoring to identify emerging issues, strengthen accountability, and intervene before financial concerns become larger compliance or stewardship problems.
Module 4: Effort Certification & Labor Compliance Controls
Analyze effort reporting requirements, labor allocation risks, and institutional responsibilities associated with compensation compliance.
Learners strengthen their understanding of how effort and labor practices connect documentation, financial integrity, institutional controls, and sponsored award accountability.
Module 5: Award Modification Governance & Change Management
Review processes for managing award changes, sponsor approvals, budget revisions, and evolving award requirements.
Learners examine how institutions evaluate proposed changes, determine approval requirements, document decisions, and manage modifications without losing visibility into sponsor or institutional obligations.
Module 6: Closeout as Control Verification & Institutional Validation
Examine closeout activities as a mechanism for validating stewardship, resolving outstanding issues, and demonstrating institutional accountability.
Learners connect award completion with final financial review, documentation, unresolved risk, institutional verification, and the stewardship responsibilities that continue through closeout.
Module 7: Indirect Cost Governance & Institutional Rate Strategy
Examine how negotiated F&A rates, cost recovery, rate application, exceptions, and institutional financial considerations affect sponsored award stewardship.
Learners strengthen their understanding of how F&A decisions influence award-level financial management, institutional recovery, documentation, and stewardship without performing the deeper rate-development work addressed in specialized F&A instruction.
Module 8: High-Risk Cost Categories & Enforcement Trends
Analyze cost categories that may create elevated financial or compliance exposure, including participant support, administrative salaries, equipment classification, cost transfers, and other areas requiring heightened professional judgment.
Learners strengthen their ability to recognize higher-risk financial activity, identify documentation and review needs, and determine when additional institutional oversight or escalation may be appropriate.
Module 9: Financial Control Failures: Institutional Case Analysis
Use case-based analysis to examine financial control breakdowns, contributing conditions, institutional consequences, and preventive responses within sponsored programs.
Learners examine how post-award financial failures develop, what warning signs may be visible, and how stronger stewardship practices can reduce the likelihood or impact of recurring problems.
Module 10: Data Integrity & ERP Governance in Sponsored Programs
Examine data integrity, ERP configuration, segregation of duties, transaction visibility, system controls, and audit traceability as they affect post-award financial administration.
Learners connect reliable financial data and system accountability with effective monitoring, documentation, decision-making, and defensible sponsored award stewardship.
Module 11: Institutional Investigations & Compliance Remediation
Explore institutional response when post-award financial or compliance concerns require formal review, corrective action, disclosure considerations, or remediation.
Learners strengthen their understanding of how post-award professionals support fact development, documentation, corrective action, communication, and escalation while recognizing when specialized compliance, audit, legal, or investigative expertise must lead.
Module 12: Executive Financial Oversight: Translating Risk for Institutional Leadership
Examine how post-award financial information, emerging risk, significant findings, trends, and institutional exposure are translated into useful information for senior leadership.
Learners strengthen their ability to communicate post-award financial risk clearly, distinguish operational issues from matters requiring leadership attention, and support informed institutional decision-making.

Content Currency & Governance
Purple Sheep Institute™ designs its research administration curriculum around enduring principles, institutional capabilities, professional judgment, and applied practice rather than temporary requirements alone.
Curriculum is reviewed annually through the Institute’s Governance Board and Advisory Council review process and updated to reflect meaningful changes in regulation, sponsorship, technology, professional practice, and the research environment.
Sponsor requirements, financial rules, reporting expectations, systems, policies, enforcement priorities, and other operational details may change. Where current requirements are discussed, learners remain responsible for confirming the requirements applicable to their institution, sponsor, award, and circumstances at the time an operational decision is made.
This approach allows the curriculum to remain durable while ensuring that meaningful developments can be incorporated through the Institute’s ongoing governance and annual review process.
